Research Visit: Embassy of Lithuania in Türkiye

October 2026

On 12 October 2026, we visited the Embassy of Lithuania and held a meeting with Ambassador Marius Janukonis as members of the Global Politics Community. We asked about Lithuania’s policies and his vision for changing the world. Ambassador Janukonis stated that the security situation in Europe is considerably different compared to the past. Since there are more security problems today, he argued that the European Union should become more united and stronger. He also emphasised that technology is an important area, particularly artificial intelligence, which is developing rapidly worldwide, and he highlighted that Europe should not lose this race.

Members of the Global Politics Community also asked about the benefits of European Union membership. In response, the Ambassador explained that countries with large economies may evaluate membership differently, but for Lithuania it is significantly beneficial. He noted that, since joining the EU, Lithuania has raised its economic level and gained access to larger market opportunities.

The discussion then moved to the defence industry. The Ambassador observed that the defence industry is growing in general and that Europe should pay closer attention to this sector. He added that drone and anti-drone systems are becoming increasingly important in the new security environment. In this regard, he stated that Türkiye is performing successfully and that the Turkish defence industry is developing very fast, mentioning well-known companies such as Aselsan and Roketsan. At the end of the conversation, he also hinted at a potential defence industry deal.

Additionally, the Ambassador gave advice on pursuing a diplomatic career. He pointed out that international relations today differ greatly from those of the past and that the global picture has changed completely. He also noted that many people argue that international law is not working effectively in addressing current international issues. According to him, these changes are felt even more strongly in Türkiye because of its geopolitical location. Therefore, he suggested that future diplomats must change themselves and develop new approaches in a changing world.

He also shared his experience as an Ambassador in Ankara. He described Ankara as an excellent environment for diplomats to work in, since it is located in a very important place. He added that Türkiye is diplomatically very active and tries to participate in every diplomatic activity and negotiation.

We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to meet with the Ambassador of Lithuania. This meeting provided us with valuable information about Lithuania’s approach to current international issues and its position in a changing world. Furthermore, it helped us broaden our global perspective and better understand international relations.

We would like to thank the Embassy of Lithuania for welcoming us.
